Beijing Language and culture University, referred to as "Beiyu", is a higher education institution directly under the Ministry of education of the people's Republic of China. It was selected into the national construction of high-level university public postgraduate project, characteristic key discipline project, Ministry of education's overseas study demonstration base, and Chinese government scholarship receiving institution for overseas students. It was established under the personal care of Premier Zhou Enlai in 1962, when it was called "foreign language university" In June 1964, it was approved by the State Council and named "Beijing Language and Culture University"; in 1974, Chairman Mao Zedong wrote the name of the University; in June 1996, it was renamed "Beijing Language and Culture University"; in 2002, it was simplified as "Beijing Language and Culture University".Beijing Language and Culture University is the only international university in China, whose main task is to educate foreign students in Chinese and Chinese culture. It is known as the "little United Nations". It provides professional education in foreign languages, Chinese, information science, economics and art to Chinese students, and undertakes the training of Chinese teachers and foreign language training before going abroad Mission. Beiyu has developed into a multidisciplinary university with the characteristics and advantages of language teaching and research, and the coordinated development of Chinese, foreign languages and related disciplines. The disciplines cover eight categories: literature, economics, law, engineering, history, education, management and art.As of October 2017, Beijing Language and Culture University covers an area of more than 330000 square meters and a building area of nearly 430000 square meters. The university has three departments, eight directly affiliated colleges (Teaching Department) and three research institutes. There are 12 research centers (or bases) at or above the provincial and ministerial level, and 33 research institutions at the university level. It has established cooperation and exchange relations with 321 universities and educational institutions in 58 countries and regions in the world, and has undertaken 18 Confucius Institutes and 1 Confucius Classroom. There are 1272 faculty members, more than 40000 Chinese students of all kinds, and nearly 9000 foreign students.
