It was established independently in 1953 and named Taiyuan Institute of technology, directly under the Ministry of higher education. It belonged to Shanxi Province in 1962. In 1984, it was renamed Taiyuan University of technology. In 1997, Taiyuan University of technology merged with Shanxi Institute of mining and technology, which was founded in 1958 and directly under the Ministry of coal, to form Taiyuan University of technology.As of April 2020, the university has four campuses, namely Mingxiang, Yingxi, Huyu and Berlin, covering an area of more than 3205 mu, with a total construction area of 1.49 million square meters.
