In 1950, it became the East China branch of the Central Academy of fine arts; in 1958, it was renamed Zhejiang Academy of fine arts; in 1993, it was renamed China Academy of fine arts. Before 2000, it was under the management of the Ministry of culture. In 2000, it became a University jointly built by the province and ministry. In 2016, it was approved to become a University jointly built by the people's Government of Zhejiang Province, the Ministry of education and the Ministry of culture.According to the school's official website in November 2019, China Academy of fine arts covers an area of more than 1000 mu, with a construction area of nearly 300000 square meters, covering Hangzhou and Shanghai. It has three campuses: Nanshan, Xiangshan and Zhangjiang. It plans to build Liangzhu campus in Hangzhou. There are more than 9000 students and about 1000 teaching staff. There are 19 secondary colleges (departments) and 26 undergraduate majors. It has three post doctoral research mobile stations, five first-class discipline doctoral degree authorization points, five first-class discipline master's degree authorization points, and three master's professional degree authorization points.
