It was founded in 1931 as an advanced engineering department of Lixian middle school. It was officially established in 1953 as "Qingdao Construction Engineering School of Shandong Province" in December 1952. In June 1953, Shandong Province was under the leadership of the Ministry of heavy industry of the Central People's government. In June 1960, it was upgraded to "Shandong Institute of metallurgy" and began to recruit undergraduates. In 1978, it was renamed as "Shandong Institute of metallurgical industry" under the Ministry of metallurgical industry. In September 1985, it was renamed "Qingdao Institute of architecture and Engineering". In 1993, it was approved as a master's degree awarding unit by the Academic Degrees Committee of the State Council. In November 1998, Shandong provincial leadership was transferred to implement the management system of "central and local co construction, with local management as the main". In May 2004, it was renamed "Qingdao University of technology".
