Guangzhou Institute of physical education, founded in July 1956, is the only undergraduate college of physical education in South China. It is also one of the earliest colleges specializing in Physical Education in China since the founding of the people's Republic of China. It is subordinate to the people's Government of Guangdong Province. It is a university with the right to confer master's degree in the first level discipline of Physical Education (including master's degree in all the second level disciplines of Physical Education) and master's degree in sports medicine in medical category. It is a post training unit for senior, middle and junior coaches of several sports events of the State General Administration of sports, with the approval power of first-class referees and first-class athletes.According to the official website of the school in January 2020, the school covers an area of 432 Mu and has 11 teaching departments. There are about 8000 full-time students and 550 teaching staff. The school library covers an area of 26000 square meters and has a collection of more than 525000 books.
